Mother's Day Gift Guide

Stuff to Buy Channel / Bullz-Eye Home

As we’ve said through the years, Moms will always appreciate it when you put some thought into your gift. Of course you can always go with flowers or chocolates, but something more personal is always better. Whether you’re buying for your Mom, your wife or other mothers on buying list, think about their interests and what would bring a smile to their face.

DVDs and Blu-rays

Movie and television shows on DVD or Blu-ray make great gifts, as you can give something that you know she’ll enjoy, and catering to her tastes will let her know that you put some thought into it.

Mad Men: Season 4
This is one of the best shows from the past 10 years, so it’s loved by both women and men. But it has a certain sense of style that makes it very popular among women. It’s beautifully shot, with great attention to the styles of the 60s. And of course there’s Jon Hamm as Don Draper. Here’s Will Harris’s take from his review of the DVD:

“Throughout Season Four, the center of the “Mad Men” universe continued to be Don, as we watched him variously win, temporarily alienate, and sometimes lose clients. After spending the first three seasons of the show as an enigma not only to others but to himself as well, Season Four was a voyage of exploration for Don, both in his personal life and in his career, and it was one which ended with his steadfast belief that he had finally found his future. But anyone who’s been watching this show since the beginning knows damned well that Don’s going to screw things up somehow. The excitement is in finding out how.”

Modern Family: The Complete Second Season
Mother’s Day makes us all think about family, and while every family has its quirks, few compare to the strange and hilarious group featured on this hugely popular show. As Will explains in his review, “The second season of “Modern Family” is easily as funny as the first, possibly even more so because of the existing familiarity with the trio of family units: Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), Claire (Julie Bowen) and Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell), and Jay (Ed O’Neill) and Gloria Pritchett (Sofia Vergara). One would be hard pressed to suggest that there’s really been any growth in the series – it’s unlikely that the average viewer would be able to spot a difference between a Season One and a Season Two episode – but, as noted, the show came out of the gate knowing exactly what it wanted to be, so there’s not really anywhere it needed to go in order to be any better, and it hasn’t been around long enough yet for it to feel stale from having not changed up the formula.”

Love Story
Every woman loves a good love story. “Love Story” made its Blu-ray debut on February 7th from Paramount Home Entertainment. One of the most romantic films ever made – and one of the most enduringly popular – “Love Story” follows two young lovers who cross social barriers for the sake of being together and ultimately face the greatest crisis of all. The film became Paramount’s most successful film to date when it was released in 1970 and made Ryan O’Neal and Ali MacGraw stars overnight. It also received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Actress, and won for Francis Lai’s magnificent musical score.

To Kill a Mockingbird
This all-time classic is also a fan favorite. “To Kill a Mockingbird,” one of the screen’s most beloved and critically acclaimed films, celebrated its 50th anniversary with a commemorative Limited Edition Collector’s Series Blu-ray combo back from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. The powerful and poignant adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel hits the half-century mark, digitally remastered and fully restored from high resolution 35MM original film elements, plus more than three-and-a-half hours of bonus features chronicling the making of the cinematic masterpiece.

Day at the Spa

You’ll be a hero with most women if you get them a gift certificate at a great spa. We’ve mentioned this many times in previous guides for other holidays, but consider it for your wife in particular, but also for your mom as well. You can use SpaFinder.com to pick a great spot.

Something from the Home

Dyson DC39
We understand that household cleaning products aren’t necessarily the types of products Mom looks forward to receiving on Mother’s Day, but Dyson has revolutionized the vacuum cleaner market and is now the gold standard in that area. Many now realize that a Dyson can make your life so much easier with the superior technology.

Dyson keeps moving forward, and their recent innovation takes people back to canister vacuums of the past. The DC39 is Dyson’s first canister vacuum with Ball™ technology for stable maneuvering around the tightest corners. The unit is remarkably light and easy to maneuver, and the canister will be preferred by many over the upright vacuums as they make it so easy to get around and under furniture and also handle tough areas like carpeted steps. Check out our review for all the details.

The DC39 makes for a great gift because it’s such a great product. Of course you might want to include something more personal or traditional like flowers or chocolate, but most moms will appreciate something as good as the DC39.
