It might be known as the Hoosier State, or home to Peyton Manning and the Super Bowl-winning Colts, but no other event holds as much attention in the state of Indianapolis as the Indy 500.

Founded in 1906 by Carl Fisher, the Indy 500 was transformed into the “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” by Anton Hullman Jr. in 1945. After Fisher sold the event to Hullman, Hullman spent millions of dollars trying to make the Indy 500 the most popular event in racing.

Despite rain delays, power struggles between carmakers and even deaths, there has been an Indy 500 race every year since 1946.

The first Indy 500 winner was Ray Harroun in 1911. Since then, IndyCar racing has been blessed with top racers like the Unser family, Mario Andretti and Rick Mears.

Al Unser, Rick Mears and A.J. Foyt Jr. all hold the record for most Indy 500 wins with four apiece. Bobby Unser has three wins and Al Unser Jr. has two. Although Mario Andretti has only won one Indy 500 race, his name is still one of the most widely recognized throughout IndyCar racing.

In ’05, the top driver was Dan Wheldon with a time of 157.603, but he wasn’t the main attraction, however. That honor went to 23-year-old Danica Patrick, who had the most competitive showing of any woman in Indy 500 history, leading the majority of the race before finally finishing fourth.

The most recent winner was Dario Franchitti, who persevered through a three-hour rain delay to win the 91st 500 and his first victory at Indy.
