Fuente Cigars – A Timeless Pleasure

I had the opportunity to take a trip back in time last week when I was gifted an Arturo Fuente “Curly Head” cigar by my brother-in-law, who received them at a recent golf outing. Actually, I was given two cigars, the second one being a Padron 2000, one of my “go to, can’t miss” favorites. However, it was the “Curly Head” that excited me more -- not because it was a rare and expensive cigar (quite the opposite) -- but because it was a cigar I smoked in my formative cigar days, and I hadn’t had one in at least 12 years. I was curious how my more exercised palette would react to this low-end cigar in the storied line of cigars associated with Arturo Fuente, one of the most famous names in the business.

The Fuente name is associated with some of the best smokes produced today, and the Fuente family of cigars is the most popular among North American consumers. Just writing about this topic has me craving a Fuente Hemmingway, one of my favorites from Fuente (or any manufacturer for that matter) and fitting my medium-body preference in a cigar. The Fuente family also produces what is probably the most hyped, super-premium cigar on the market, the Fuente Fuente Opus X. If you are the type who wants to make a big impression with a cigar, as a spender of big bucks, and be recognized for doing so, purchase the Opus X. But be warned – it packs a load of nicotine and a hefty price tag. I hope to review additional Fuentes in the future.

So, lets get smokin’ this Curly Head!

Cigar Review:

Size: Lonsdale (6.5 inches long, 43 ring gauge)

Price: $2-plus range

The Arturo Fuente Curly Head has its niche in the market and among the Arturo Fuente brand lines. Over the years, the Curly Head has come to be known as:

  1. The poor man’s Arturo Fuente cigar;
  2. A beginner’s cigar, often recommended to newbies as an introduction to cigar smoking;
  3. A good “yard gar.” (In other words, something to smoke while cutting the grass, but not something you would put a flame to after a great steak dinner at a Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

It is reportedly a cigar rolled using the scraps from the more expensive brands produced by Fuente. It is also, by definition, a “short filler” cigar. Because it is rolled from premium cigar scraps, it lacks the longer, fuller leaf that is associated with modern-day premium cigars (a.k.a. long filler cigar).

Tobacco blend:

  • Wrapper: Dominican Republic
  • Filler and binder: Dominican Republic

Context

After returning home from a four-hour drive, I had to catch up on some outdoor work. I thought the Curly Head could accompany me during the light work that I had to tackle. So, I used it as a “yard gar.”

Look and feel

Pre-lit, these cigars are not much to look at. The rolling job is not that of a premium cigar, but then again they are not premiums. It felt all right between the fingers, although there were a couple of softer spots. The wrapper was natural in color and it appeared to be a fairly nice wrapper.

Aroma and Taste

The cigar provided a medium bodied, but pretty harsh, smoke with no real enjoyable flavors. It had a fairly singular taste, charred wood, which was uninspiring. I also had some minor trouble keeping it lit. The aroma was a little better. After puffing this stick to the halfway point, I gave up on it, let it expire and tossed it.

I just did not care for it much.

RATING: 7.7 (on a scale of 1 to 10)

I am pretty sure that the cigar I smoked was a little below the average Curly Head. Though I have rated this cigar relatively low, I still think that it does continue to have its place in the cigar world. At $2 each, they are an excellent choice for the consumer, good to give away at larger events, etc. Unfortunately (or fortunately), my taste buds and my purchasing power have evolved beyond this point years ago. I do believe that there are better sticks on the market.
