“Cubanova,” “Funky Picante,” and the title track are the first three songs, and they are all upbeat and melodic with Antoine’s precision guitar picking. “Castellana Hood” and “Gotham” are the kind of songs to seduce your girlfriend with. I could even imagine Sade singing melody lines over these tracks. “Gringo” is more of a groove piece, more R&B or Steely Dan-esque in nature. The final track, “Alejandro’s Lullaby,” was written for Antoine’s son and is a really pretty finale to this fine collection. Okay, I’m a guitar player so my appreciation for any type of guitar work runs deep. If you’re not a player (no, not THAT kind of player!) I could see you getting bored with this one at times, if only because that can be the nature of instrumental music. On the other hand, I think most guys need more stuff like Marc Antoine in their CD collections. It is well-written, well-produced smooth jazz that relaxes both mind and body. And if you’re lucky, it does the same for your lady. ~Mike Farley mfarley@bullz-eye.com
