The Aware label, which recently became part of the Sony/Columbia congolomerate, has produced some great bands in the past decade. Better Than Ezra, Train and Athenaeum are just a few. The debut of Five For Fighting is a very solid release as well. Primarily a band that is built around songwriter and piano player John Ondrasik, these guys have a lot going for them.

The first single, "Easy Tonight," is a lot like a Matthews song as is the equally catchy "Something About You." Ondrasik likes writing songs about heroes, super and otherwise. "Superman," the current single, is written in the first person -- "It's not easy to be me," while "Michael Jordan" is a nice contrast: "I would give anything to be you." "Jainy" is a sentimental ballad about a hooker, if there could be such a thing, but he pulls it off nicely.

The second half of the record lags a bit, and Ondrasik's voice does grate on you a little, but songs like "Love Song" show off some interesting lyrics. This one is seemingly about a young boy's view of his parents' divorce. Fans of DMB and the Crows will find this one a nice addition to their collection.
