Most auto manufacturers got their start from a love of cars, a passion for the road, or from a need some entrepreneur thought could be filled. Suzuki, on the other hand, got its start in weaving. Yes, you read that correctly. Michio Suzuki was born into an artisan culture and thought to start a loom manufacturing company when he was 22. The business flourished and his looms were soon spread all over Asia.

The loom plant barely escaped World War II, but it survived, leaving Suzuki to look for the future of his company. The people of Japan had long been in need of cheap, reliable transportation, a need Suzuki’s son would fill by creating a motor that could power a bicycle. The powered bicycle eventually lead to the Suzulight, Japan’s first light car, and the beginning of the Suzuki Motor Co. Today Suzuki is best known for its motorcycles and all-terrain vehicles, but the car division is one of the most rapidly growing in the world, offering entry level vehicles with a decent feature set at a reasonable cost.

Resources

Suzuki
The Suzuki page is remarkably straightforward for a company on the rise. The company relies heavily on their history to drive the brand and their ‘About Suzuki’ page reflects that focus. Of course, you can find the typical retail and ownership resources you’d find on any manufacturer’s site here.

Suzuki at Wikipedia
The Suzuki page at Wikipedia is a little scattered, much like Suzuki’s own history. Still, the page is informative, and does a nice job covering the history of the brand and its changes from loom-making to the automotive industry. If this page could improve in one spot, we’d ask them to beef up that motorcycle section.

Suzuki at Autoblog
Suzuki tends to get pushed into the background behind the other big names coming out of Japan. Whenever they do something newsworthy, though, you can bet the guys at Autoblog know about it. From concept cars to the most mundane domestic developments, you’ll know when someone on the Suzuki board sneezes here, and in full detail.
