Since faking his death at the end of the first film, the infamous Jimmy “The Tulip” Tudeski (Bruce Willis) has thrown in the towel as a contract killer, leaving all the excitement to his accident-prone wife Jill (Amanda Peet) while he stays home to cook and clean. Oz (Matthew Perry), on the other hand, has become totally obsessed with security since the threatening events of the prior film, installing surveillance equipment all over his property while his wife Cynthia (Natasha Henstridge) sits by the pool sunbathing. When big-time Hungarian mobster Lazlo Gogolak (Kevin Pollack) is released from prison and kidnaps Cynthia, Oz must head down to Mexico and beg for Jimmy’s help.
There are plenty of twists and turns in the script to keep the audience guessing, but you can usually see them miles before they arrive. The cast members, who have been handed one of the worst scripts ever written, work overtime in performing their all-too-dull comedic moments with a lavish hope that they might make the audience laugh. Another problem with the film’s new director/writer team is their radical change in the overall story, transforming Willis’ character into the emotional mess that we’ve seen too much of in the mobsters of “The Sopranos” and “Analyze This.”
There’s nothing good to say about “The Whole Ten Yards.” It’s dull, long and uninspiring. The next time Hollywood considers a sequel, they might want to put less time in the thought and more time in the production. If you must, wait for the DVD.
